Who else thinks bro marketing is GROSS? 🤮
When $5,000 Taught Me What Success Isn’t
Two weeks ago, I spent $5,000—plus plane tickets and hotel costs—to attend a business growth workshop hosted by well-known marketers with massive audiences. Their Instagram content and books had provided so much value, I was convinced this in-person event would be a game-changer.
Unfortunately, the experience left me disappointed. Here’s what happened:
The event was marketed as inclusive, but it became clear it catered to one type of business owner.
The room lacked diversity; I was one of four women of color in a group of 120 people, mostly under 35.
The structure revolved around upselling attendees into a $20,000 program, leaving little room for personalized feedback or meaningful connections.
The Problem With One-Size-Fits-All Growth
While the room was full of impressive business owners—some making $35 million annually—the event felt like a high-pressure sales funnel. The one-size-fits-all approach ignored the nuances of different businesses and their unique challenges.
This led me to question:
Why does growth always need to mean “more revenue at all costs”?
Why do we allow capitalism to lump every business into the same category?
I believe it’s time to redefine growth and success. Success isn’t about blindly chasing numbers; it’s about aligning with values, serving specific communities, and creating sustainable, meaningful impact.
What 2024 Looks Like for Me
In 2024, I’m stepping away from the belief that “more is always better.” Instead, I’m embracing the idea that success can feel rich without being about revenue alone. For me, this means:
Choosing to work with fewer clients, but doing it with more depth and intention.
Focusing on creating diverse and inclusive spaces for business owners from all backgrounds.
Prioritizing my health, well-being, and alignment over hustle culture.
As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of this truth: It can feel rich to make less revenue when you gain freedom, fulfillment, and alignment in return.
Surround Yourself With the Right Voices
One of the most jarring moments at the workshop was overhearing two attendees brag about telling their wives to stay home after having kids to “take care of the mess at home.” This made me realize how important it is to be mindful of the voices we allow into our lives.
Instead of following the “loudest guys in the room,” I encourage you to seek out communities that align with your values and empower you to define success on your own terms.
