Anthropic launched a Claude plugin to work across the tools you already run your business on, like QuickBooks and PayPal. Here’s what the new Claude for Small Business plugin actually does, whether it’s worth your time, and how to start without being technical.

A small business owner handing off after-hours tasks like invoicing and payroll to an AI assistant working inside her existing tools.

You know the horrors of the never ending admin to-do list. The invoices that need to be monitored. The campaign you keep meaning to send. You run the business all day, then catch up on admin at night, long after you should be off.

On May 13, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business, and it’s aimed directly at that admin list. It’s a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows that integrates the tools you already use, like QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, and Canva, so it can actually do the work for you instead of just giving advice. It installs as a one-click plugin inside Claude Cowork, the same desktop tool I’m using to save 15-20 hours a week in my biz.

Small business owners have been the last group to get AI built for how they actually work, and women founders especially are falling behind on it right now. This is a great attempt to fix that. Let me show you what’s in it and how to decide if it’s for you.

An honest disclosure first: I’m not an affiliate for Claude, and I don’t earn anything if you try this. I don’t even use this exact plugin, because I built all my own Claude skills from scratch. That’s why I can say it plainly. A ready-made plugin is worth your attention precisely because building your own eats time you don’t have. It lets you take action this week instead of spending a month wiring up and testing a system yourself. My only goal with posts like this is to keep you in the loop on the AI news and tools that could actually make running your business easier.

1. What is Claude for Small Business?

Claude for Small Business is a package that connects Claude to the software you already run your business on and hands it a set of jobs it can complete start to finish. Per Anthropic’s announcement, it includes 15 ready-to-run workflows and 15 skills across finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR, and customer service.

Claude for Small Business is a one-click plugin you install in Claude Cowork on the desktop app. You turn the plugin on with its toggle, connect the tools you use, then pick the job, either in plain English or with a command like /plan-payroll. Claude does the work, and you approve it before anything sends, posts, or pays. The tools it connects to include Intuit QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Stripe, and Square.

The reason this is different from asking ChatGPT a question is that it touches your real accounts. When it plans your payroll, it’s reading your actual QuickBooks cash position against your actual PayPal settlements. When it drafts a campaign, it’s pulling your real HubSpot numbers. It’s the difference between an assistant who gives you advice and one who opens the file and starts working. I shared more about that shift in this podcast ep, from chatbot to coworker if you want the fuller picture.

2. Why small business owners keep getting left behind on AI

Small businesses make up 44% of U.S. GDP and employ nearly half the private-sector workforce, according to Anthropic’s own framing of the launch. Yet their AI adoption trails big companies, because the tools and the training were built for enterprises, not for someone running a 1-5 person shop.

The JPMorgan Chase Institute found that only 17.7% of small businesses were paying for AI services as of December 2025. That’s the real adoption number, based on actual transaction data, not survey hype.

Here’s the part that should get your attention if you’re a woman running a business. The same research on the AI adoption gap shows women-owned businesses reached 17.2% adoption by 2025 while men-owned businesses hit 19.7%, and that gap has been widening, growing from 0.3 points in 2019 to 2.5 points in 2025. We are not falling behind because we’re less capable. We’re falling behind because the tools were never explained in a way that respected our time, and because “just go learn AI” is a luxury when you’re already doing three jobs.

Anthropic’s own words for the problem are that most owners’ use of AI “stops at the chat window.” You ask it a question, you get an answer, and then you go back to doing the actual task by hand. The whole point of this launch is to move past that. Whether it delivers on that promise for you depends on the next few sections.

3. What can Claude for Small Business actually do?

The workflows are built around the tasks small biz owners said slow them down most. From Anthropic’s launch details, a few of the standouts:

Planning payroll with confidence. It settles your QuickBooks cash position against incoming PayPal settlements, builds a 30-day forecast, ranks what’s overdue, and queues the reminders for you to approve and send.

Closing the month with fewer errors. It reconciles your books against settlements, flags what doesn’t match, writes a plain-English profit-and-loss summary, and exports a close packet you can forward straight to your accountant.

Chasing invoices. There’s a dedicated invoice chaser that finds who owes you and drafts the follow-ups, so the money you already earned actually shows up.

Running your next campaign. It finds the slow stretch in your revenue, analyzes your HubSpot campaign performance, drafts the promo strategy, and generates the assets in Canva.

Beyond those, the package includes a margin analyzer, a month-end prepper, a tax-season organizer, a contract reviewer, a lead triager, and a content strategist. The through-line is that these are the unglamorous, repeatable jobs that eat your evenings, not the creative work only you can do.

4. Is it safe to connect my financial tools to an AI?

In a survey Anthropic ran with small business owners, half named data security as their single biggest hesitation about AI. Connecting your bank-adjacent tools to anything new deserves real caution.

A few things about how it’s built, from Anthropic’s Trust Center notes on the launch. You stay in the loop: every task is initiated by you, and you approve the plan before it runs, or you let it run end-to-end only when you decide it’s ready. Your existing permissions hold, so if an employee can’t see something in QuickBooks or Google Drive today, they can’t see it through Claude either. And on the Team and Enterprise plans, your data isn’t used for training by default.

None of that means you should connect everything on day one. Start with one low-stakes workflow, watch what it does, and keep the approval step on until you trust it. Read every draft before it sends, the same way you’d check a new assistant’s work for the first month.

Here’s 5 ways you can use Perplexity AI to help you get PR

A pitch that reads like a machine wrote it gets caught, because reporters read these every day now and platforms score them on sight. Use AI to clear the busywork so you have time for the 150 human words that land. The personalization is the whole game. Don’t let a tool do the one part that was always going to be yours.

Plus when it comes to journalist inquiries, they’re telling you exactly what to include in the pitch. Your founder story, your product that does xyz, and a clear image. You don’t need AI to do that right? You know your story best! And probably already have that written out in your brand guideline or website about page.

But for cold pitching journalists outside of these media connection platforms, you might want my exact framework for writing relevant pitches using AI. My free AI + PR Masterclass will demo those AI tools for you!

5. Who is Claude for Small Business really for?

Even though this is for “small business owners”, I still wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.

It’s a strong fit if you already run on the connected tools. If your books live in QuickBooks, you take payments through PayPal, you manage leads in HubSpot, or you build content in Canva, this was made for your exact setup. Solopreneurs and small teams drowning in back-office admin will feel it most, because that’s the work it’s designed to lift.

It’s a weaker fit if your systems are a shoebox of receipts and a notes app. The tool works by plugging into structured data, so if your finances aren’t in one of these platforms yet, you’ll get less out of it until they are. That’s not a reason to skip it. It might be the reason to finally get your books into QuickBooks, because now there’s a payoff for doing it.

Both Anthropic and the JPMorgan Chase Institute make the same point, that access to AI isn’t enough without the skills to use it. That’s actually good news. It means the owners who take a weekend to learn this well will pull ahead of the ones who bought the subscription and never opened it.

6. How to get started with Claude for Small Business this week

You don’t need to overhaul anything. Here’s the smallest useful first step.

  1. Install the plugin and connect one tool. In the Claude Cowork desktop app, install the one-click Small Business plugin, toggle it on, then connect the platform where your worst admin lives, usually QuickBooks or PayPal. Just one to start.

  2. Run one low-stakes workflow. Try the invoice chaser or a business pulse summary before you touch payroll. You want to see how it works on something reversible first.

  3. Read everything before you approve it. Treat the first few runs like training a new hire. Check the draft, correct what’s off, approve when it’s right.

  4. Take the free training. Anthropic partnered with PayPal on a free course, AI Fluency for Small Business, taught by owners who’ve built AI into their own operations. It covers which tasks in your business are actually right for AI, which is the part most people get wrong. I also have my own AI chatbot to coworker training, if you want a breakdown of the difference between Claude and Claude Cowork for your business.

  5. Then reinvest the time. Once the back office runs itself, put those reclaimed hours toward the work that grows the business. Like pitching for media features, guesting on a podcast, speaking at an event…

FAQs

1. What is Claude for Small Business?

It’s a package from Anthropic that connects Claude to the tools you already use, like QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, and Canva, and runs ready-made workflows for finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR, and customer service. It launched May 13, 2026, as a one-click plugin you install and toggle on inside the Claude Cowork desktop app.

Regular AI chat gives you answers. This does the task inside your real accounts, like reconciling your books or drafting invoice reminders from your actual data. Anthropic’s framing is that most owners’ AI use “stops at the chat window,” and this is built to move past that.

No. You toggle it on, connect a tool, and pick a job from a menu of ready-made workflows. It’s built for owners, not developers. Anthropic and PayPal also offer a free AI Fluency course to walk you through it.

Anthropic built in human approval on every task, kept your existing permissions in place, and does not train on your data by default on Team and Enterprise plans. Half of owners surveyed named data security as their top concern, so start with one low-stakes workflow and keep the approval step on until you trust it.

The plugin itself is free to install. It runs on standard Claude plans, Claude Pro for individuals or Claude Team for a whole business, so your real cost is the subscription. See claude.com/pricing for current rates.

Yes, arguably most useful there, since solopreneurs carry all the back-office admin themselves. The catch is that it works by connecting to structured tools, so you’ll get more out of it if your finances already live in something like QuickBooks.

JPMorgan Chase Institute data shows women-owned businesses trail men-owned businesses on AI adoption, and the gap is widening. Tools built for how small businesses actually operate, plus free training, are how that gap closes. Being early here is a real advantage.
